AHB Foundation Awards 85 Scholarships

The Alabama Home Builders Foundation awarded a total of 85 scholarships this year to men and women desiring to study
the building trades at technical, two-year, and four-year schools throughout Alabama. The recipients were determined by
the Foundation’s scholarship committee in the spring.

In addition to scholarships from the general scholarship fund, several students received specially designated scholarships. Seth Michael and Whit Winford were the recipients of the Bentley Owens Memorial Scholarships, given in honor of one of the founding HBAA members, Bentley Owens, who was a strong supporter of education. Tyler Sample received the Jon Michael Hill Scholarship, given in memory of Jon Michael Hill, the son of HBAA member Rep. Mike Hill. Timothy Landon Turner was presented with the John H. Street, Sr. memorial scholarship, given in memory of the late John H. Street, Sr. a longtime active member of the HBA of Greater Calhoun County.

Rashad Boyd, Torrence Campbell, Janeka Harris, DeMichael Steele, Santray Walters, DiAnthony Withers, Toi Lanthony Withers, and Bradley Wright were all recipients of Malone-McQueen Scholarships, awarded to students in Central Alabama seeking to study building trades at a Montgomery-area technical school. The scholarships are given in memory of Charles and Mary Malone and William N. McQueen, and in honor of Polly McQueen.

The Foundation’s scholarship program was established in 1997 to help attract new tradespeople to the housing industry and to provide them with the tools and training they need in order to be successful. The bulk of the scholarship funds comes from proceeds from the annual Foundation Golf Classic, held annually in May.

Any student wishing to study the building trades at a twoyear, four-year or technical school in Alabama is eligible to apply for a scholarship. Scholarship applications are available online at www.ahbfoundation.org, or students may call the HBAA at
1-800-745-4222 for scholarship information.
